James Gordon Asprey was born in Wimbledon, Surrey in 1885, his mother died in 1890 when he was just over 3 years old. His father remarried in 1892 & more brothers & sisters were added to the family.
James Gordon Asprey was a Railway Signalman in London, & later became a Painter Decorator.
When James turned 21yrs. in 1906 he applied for his birth certificate & soon after that emigrated to Australia. His Uncle Alfred Comber & family also emigrated at around this time & they may have come out together.
He came to Australia as a young man around 1906 & served in the Australian Army during World War 2 & fought in France, where he was gassed at Calais 2nd April 1918 & sent back to England to King George hospital in London for treatment, then returned to the 3rd. auxillary in Dartford, Kent. He rejoined the forces in August 1918 in Forant & in Jan. 1919 was sent to a Concentration Camp at Codford. He returned to Australia 19th Feb. 1919 aboard ship 'Orca'.
He joined on 25th Feb 1916 & was a Signalman in the 24th Battalion - A.I.F. - 5788 Pte, & discharged 15th May 1919.
He qualified as a 1st Class Signaller at No. 2 Group, Signalling School, Rollestone on 17-10-1917. (in 22nd Battalion)
James was a Master Mason of the Crimea Lodge, No. 432. He resigned on 31st Aug 1937.
James was also a member of the Collingwood Rifle Club & an excellent shot.
